What Is an NRI Full Form?

NRI full form is  Non-Resident Indian. It is a term using to refer to those people who come from India and live outside of the country.

  • Non-resident Indians (NRI) are people of Indian origin who reside outside the territory of India, but they retain their Indian citizenship and have not acquired any other citizenship or nationality.
  • NRI is mainly used as a socio-economic categorization and not as a legal term in India and most countries with significant Indian diaspora populations, such as the United States, Canada, Malaysia, Singapore etc.

Types of NRIs:

Three Types of NRIs fall under the category of Overseas Citizens

  • OCI: Those who belong to a country like Pakistan and Bangladesh and have obtained citizenship from those countries.
  • PIO: People of Indian origin who were born outside India or belong to a country like Pakistan and Bangladesh but do not hold citizenship from those countries.
  • NRI: Persons of Indian origin who reside outside India as well as citizens of other countries like the USA, China etc.
  • Overseas Citizen: Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) can apply for Overseas Citizenship by investing in an Indian company or buying properties worth more than 1 crore rupees in India.
